Another aspect of GHBA’s efforts to Build A Greater Houston is its support to those who are homeless.
HomeAid Houston is a local chapter of the national HomeAid organization. The primary objective is to provide shelter for the temporarily homeless. HomeAid Houston’s first project was Bonita Street House of Hope, a 199-bed facility serving homeless women and children, which opened in the spring of 2005. Builder captains were Beazer Homes, Lennar Homes and Davis Brothers Construction. For 2005 and 2006, HomeAid Houston and other chapters hit by the hurricanes received extra funding from Ameriquest Mortgage – the Gulf Coast Rebuilding Fund – specifically targeted for projects helping hurricane victims.
In January 2006, HomeAid Houston broke ground for Wellsprings Village, consisting
of six houses with eight beds
each. It houses homeless women who are hurricane evacuees,
victims of domestic abuse, drug and alcohol addicts, as well as those who are jobless. Builder captains are Tilson Home Corporation and David Weekley Homes.
Additionally, ground breaking of the 16-unit Mission of Yahweh dormitory also occurred in early January and the facility will serve the same clientele. Builder captains for the Mission of Yahweh are Doyle Stuckey Homes and Green Mountain Building Company. |
